My wonderful husband is apart of a fraternity and every year they have a boat ride. I have never gone but this year I wanted to experience it. It was fun but choosing an outfit for it was not at first. As a woman we have to think much more about our look than men. We have way more options to choose from and not only does the look have to be fashionable but it needs to be practical as well. Men don’t have to worry about problems like run’s in stalkings, shoes that hurt like you know what, panty lines, dimples, ripples, pudge and the list goes on. As (classy) women we need to and do think about those things. Moreover, there are other practical considerations that come into play such as temperature weather conditions, and the desired activity surrounding the event. I don’t know about you, but I am wearing a whole different set of pumps to a black tie affair than I am to a dance party, if you know what I am saying! Nevertheless I still want to look fabulous for both events and might I add without breaking the bank! That’s why I have put together 4 tips that I have applied to my own style for doing just that!
1.Understand the Event
Really, really, really understanding what you are getting into before you start shopping for that perfect look is essential. Understand the potential activities, the amount of people attending, the location and all the details! (Even understand what kind of flooring you will be walking on hunnay! NO falling allowed because you wore the wrong stiletto’s lol) This will help you narrow down your look to something that is practical and essentially make you feel more confident during the event because you will be wearing something comfortable/appropriate for the occasion.
2. If the Shoe Fits…
Shoes are so critical to every woman’s outfit. I don’t know about you but I am not the one that changes into slippers at the party when my feet hurt. I wear my heels the whole night “pain or shine” and then rip them off once I gracefully slide in the car (sigh of relief). So if you are like me finding the perfect shoe that is cute and will withstand your whole night is key. Therefore make sure you try them on at home and walk in them for about 2 hours on carpet before you decide to wear them. If they don’t kill your feet by the end of the 2 hours then they will hold up the entire night. If not, return them! Most celebratory events will not have you on your feet for 2 hours straight with no option to sit so if you can wear them in your home on carpet for that long with mild discomfort, then your golden.
3. Wear What Makes You Feel Most Confident
Got a favorite dress, pants, skirt, or top? Identify why those pieces are your favorite. Do you love your shoulders? Then show them! Do you love your legs? Then let them loose. You may love other parts of your body but I would advise to contain those within reason lol! You get the picture though, wear cuts and styles that have historically worked for you and then take it up a notch by trying those favorite styles in a bold color, print or combo. Also up the game by adding accessories that complement the look well.
4. Shop out of season for discounts
Never underestimate the power of the clearance rack! Even if from a distance you see sweaters amongst the mess of clothing, browse any way. Not sure if they will have dresses on that rack browse anyway! I have found so many hidden gems on the discount, out of season clearance rack because I took the time to look! You will get the most bang for your buck taking this approach, trust me!
